Princess Theatre

Sophie and her team at Sophie Hart Studio worked closely with the owners of The Princess Theatre and Sam Bowstead the lead architect at JDA Co. to reimagine the heritage building. SHS designed the overall look and feel for all the rooms. From the outset Sophie’s creative concept was to create the inset Proscenium around the stage to draw the audience eye in and give the artists a more intimate space to perform. A curve arch feature was then applied in all the bar areas, to tie them together throughout the venue, as well as tie in with the original features of the building. Marble was chosen for the Gallery Bar, and rich wood panelling for the auditorium bar. Beautiful aged glass mirrors were placed behind the bars. Other key elements managed by SHS included:

  • Creating colour scheme and paint colours that worked back with the heritage building

  • Sourcing carpets and flooring, including balcony tiles

  • Sourcing lighting - wall and pendants which the exception of the stage and house lighting in the auditorium

  • Sourcing furniture

  • Consulting on landscaping for outside courtyard garden and in-house greenery

This project has gone onto win the The Australian Good Design Award Gold accolade, more commonly known as the Good Design Tick, which is among the most respected and recognised international design endorsement symbols in the industry.
