The House

Sophie and her team at Sophie Hart Studio were appointed to work closely with the client to create a space that reflected the dry tropics of far North Queensland. Sophie’s creative concept was to move away from the coastal style Queensland has taken a liking, of white and blue Hamptons interiors, to embrace the natural surrounds. The team selected a colour palette that worked back with the environment and felt true to country. The House is anchored on the land with incredible ocean views as the focal point. As a concrete structure the interiors needed to soften the space and create warmth. Building the interior palette started with collecting shells, leaves, bark, driftwood, and quartz. The interior selections started with a piece of quartz that similar to a piece of fabric Sophie had come across and the team grew the look from there.

Unlike most beach houses where the sea is brought into the interior colour palate, SHS wanted to bring the land into The House, to echo the environment, then the view of the ocean became framed art as the outlook. Sophie wanted The House interiors to feel solid and safe but with playful elements. A balance between the ultimate holiday home and a luxury destination stay. Due to the harsh dry tropical environment with sun, salt, sand, high spec outdoor fabrics and marine grade fixtures were a used.

The client wanted The House to have two very different and defined spaces. Downstairs was to be super relaxed, so guests felt comfortable to wander about in bathers and boardshorts with sandy feet. Whereas upstairs needed a more sophisticated feel, think linen shirts, glamourous kaftans and a cocktail in hand. Other key elements managed by SHS included:

  • Sourcing furniture inside and out

  • Working closely with furniture designer to make bespoke pieces

  • Commissioning artworks by local artists

  • Sourcing homewares from vases to plates and cutlery to all the books and games

  • Sourcing kitchen appliances for private chef

  • Overseeing House merchandise, from concept to manufacturing

  • Sourcing eco dry amenities

  • Sourcing body and bath products

  • Advising on branding

  • Styling photoshoots for website/social media and architect photoshoots
